Gaining recognition for course credit

Using UWHS credit at the University of Washington

Any credits you earn through the UWHS program will be accepted at the University of Washington. If you wish to take the next course in a sequence, you must take a placement test. If you choose to attend the UW, the UWHS coordinator can help you secure a spot in the next class in a sequence on campus, with advanced notice.

Transferring UWHS credit to other schools

The University of Washington cannot guarantee that another institution will automatically accept UWHS credit. Most public and private colleges and universities, however, will accept the credit. Before enrolling in a UWHS course, you should check with the institution you plan on attending so that you are aware of their policy regarding university credit earned in high school.

It's important to keep a copy of your syllabus, including grading scale and assignments, as well as papers, compositions, tests, etc. If necessary, these can be submitted to a college or departmental adviser at the so-called "receiving institution."

In some cases, an institution will not grant credit for the UWHS course but will allow you to enroll in a course for which the UW course is a prerequisite, or it will exempt you from an equivalent course. If you are required to take a placement exam to prove competence in material covered in UWHS courses, you should do so as soon as possible after arriving on campus, and look over relevant UWHS course materials to ensure the best chance of doing well on the exam.

Some institutions will allow a student to "challenge" a course by taking an examination. This is not the same as a placement exam. If you pass this exam, you will get course credit. Again, if you elect to take this option, you should review relevant course materials before taking the exam.

Whether an institution ultimately gives recognition for the UWHS course or not, you will have gained valuable knowledge and study skills.
