Eligibility
Teacher eligibility
Requirements vary depending on the subject matter and are determined by the University departments involved. For example, those wishing to teach English composition must have an M.A. and at least three years experience teaching composition. World languages teachers must be able to speak, read and write the language they wish to teach and be familiar with the culture and civilization of at least one area of the world where the language is spoken. Mathematics teachers must submit a transcript of their own work. Geology teachers are evaluated individually. All teachers are approved to teach by the chair of the appropriate University department and the divisional dean of their subject area.
Assessing students' readiness for a university course
Students must have a B+ in previous courses in the subject area and, in some cases, permission of the instructor before enrolling in a UWHS course. Aside from that, good predictors of success in UW courses are:
- Ability to read academic English
- Ability to analyze and think critically
- Curiosity about intellectual matters and a willingness to deal with "grown-up" subject matter or to look at topics or subjects in a new way
- Time to do and willingness to devote the necessary time to assignments
- A willingness to participate in all classes or activities
- Accept evaluations that, at least in the beginning of their course, may not be what they are used to receiving
- Self motivated to contact an institution to which they wish to transfer UWHS credit concerning its policies about concurrent enrollment credit
