  • English Composition: Literature (111)
    Study and practice of good writing; topics derived from reading and discussing stories, poems, essays and plays.

  • English Composition: Exposition (131)
    Study and practice of good writing; topics derived from a variety of personal, academic, and public subjects.

History

  • The American People and Their Culture in the Modern Era: A History of the United States Since 1940 (235)
    Through a variety of methods, students are encouraged to examine evidence and to think historically about persons, events, and movements within the memory of the last two generations.

Informatics

  • Fluency in Information Technology (100)
    Introduces skills, concepts, and capabilities necessary to effectively use information technology. Includes logical reasoning, effective Web searching and database manipulation, managing complexity, operation of computers and networks, and ethical aspects of information technology.

Languages

Courses cover all areas of language learning (speaking, listening, reading, writing and knowledge of culture). Successful completion of a 103-level course satisfies the UW exit requirement in foreign languages for most degree programs.

Mathematics

  • Precalculus (120)
    Basic properties of functions, graphs; with emphasis on linear, quadratic, trigonometric, exponential functions and their inverses. Emphasis on multi-step problem solving.

  • Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (124)
    First quarter in the calculus of functions of a single variable. Emphasizes differential calculus, and applications and problem solving using the tools of calculus.

Science

  • Astronomy (101)
    Introduction to the universe, with emphasis on conceptual, as contrasted to mathematical, comprehension. Modern theories, observations; ideas concerning nature, evolution of galaxies; quasars, stars, black holes, planets, and solar systems.

  • Earth and Space Sciences (101)
    Survey of the physical systems that give the Earth its form. Emphasizes the dynamic nature of interior and surface processes and the relevance to mankind, and stresses the value of rocks and earth forms in the understanding of past events.

  • Oceanography (101)
    Holistic view of fundamental principals of ocean science; the geography and geology of ocean basins; physical dynamics of currents, waves, and tides; coastal processes; and the biology of diverse ecosytstems.

Other opportunities to earn UW credit

The Federal Way School District’s Internet Academy offers UW in the High School online. In addition, individual students can take a wide variety of courses through UW Online Learning providing they can satisfy any course prerequisites. Before enrolling, students must provide a transcript of high school courses and a letter from a school counselor or principal. They must also have completed the ninth grade and have at least a B+ average. UW Online Learning courses are taught by UW instructors.
