Why offer UW in the High School courses?
University of Washington in the High School (UWHS) classes offer a rewarding experience for teachers, students and schools.
Teachers will find teaching a UWHS course to be a satisfying challenge that allows them to develop new instructional materials, set higher standards for working with students, and help students learn better study habits in preparation for college-level work. Working with a UW department-appointed liaison, teachers learn to use the UW curriculum, activities, syllabus, text, tests and grading scales with their high school students. Both teachers and students have access to UW libraries while participating in a UWHS course.
Students earn valuable knowledge and credits while in an age-appropriate environment that is familiar to them. Their final grade does not depend on one high-stakes test, but is built over time. Students who have completed a UWHS course say they are better prepared for college-level work and that their study skills have improved as a result of taking the course.
Participating schools have found that implementing the UWHS program has led to stronger curriculum for juniors and seniors. And, because students remain on the high school campus, schools do not lose FTE funds.
