About UW Online Learning: Grants

Awards  ·  Partnerships  ·  Grants

The University of Washington's involvement in online education has yielded a number of large grants. Here is a sampling of them:

  • National Science Foundation. The National Science Foundation granted the UW $500,000 to develop online versions of the Fluency in Technology (FIT) class, an introductory survey of information technology for students without technical backgrounds. A version of the course will be offered tuition-free through the Web.

  • National Institute on Drug Abuse. The UW received $352,000 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to develop an online Certificate in Addiction and the Brain. The program will offer timely and accurate information about the functioning of the brain’s reward system and the changes caused by addictive drugs. The program will be a joint effort of the UW School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, the College of Education and Educational Outreach.

  • U.S. Department of Education – Learning Anywhere Anytime Partnership (LAAP). The UW, in cooperation with Prentice-Hall, the Public Broadcasting Service, and the World Organization of Webmasters, won a $1.4 million grant from the Department of Education to develop programs for training of Web technology professionals. These programs prepare Web professionals for national certifications based on new standards set by WOW. The courses use classroom sessions, online, video and off-the-shelf tutorial formats, and can be licensed to other parties.

  • Sloan Foundation. The UW is a member of the Sloan Foundation consortium (sloan-c.org), a group of educational institutions dedicated to quality online education. Members include the universities of California-Berkeley, Wisconsin, and Illinois, Stanford University, and Johns Hopkins University. The foundation granted the UW $165,000 to develop an online master’s degree in construction engineering, the first of its kind in the nation.

  • The National Institutes of Health. The National Institutes of Health awarded the UW $200,000 to develop, implement and evaluate a three-course certificate program about brain research in education designed primarily for K-12 educators. The online format will allow for a dissemination of the program to remote, underserved rural areas.
