English as a Second Language Courses

These quarterly online courses are intensive and interactive, providing detailed one-on-one help from the instructor. E-mail and internet access are required.

Self-Placement: To determine the best class for you, please take the UW Online English Language Self-Placement Test (UWOELST), and preview the course level and content before you register. For guidelines on choosing a course, see the full course descriptions at the English Language Programs Web site.

You may register for these courses online; see How to Register below.

How to Register

You may register for these courses online. To register, follow these steps:

  1. In the list of courses above, click on the course you want to take and then click on "Register."

  2. Scroll down to "Noncredit Courses" and click on "Continue."

  3. The course you chose and the cost will appear in the table. If this information is correct, click on "Continue Registration Process." (If this information is not correct, click on "Delete Transaction.")

  4. Complete the "Personal Information" fields. If you don't have a Social Security Number, leave that field blank. Be sure to include your e-mail address so that your online teacher can contact you.

  5. Complete the "Credit Card Information" and click on "Send Electronically." If you are not comfortable using a credit card, print the registration form and send it with a US-affiliated bank check or money order made payable to the "University of Washington."

You will receive an e-mail message from your teacher before the course begins. You will also receive a written confirmation of your registration.

Matriculated University of Washington students should contact Dina Johnson at 206-685-6365 or dcjohnson@extn.washington.edu to register for online sections of the Academic English Program.

Withdrawals and Refunds: If you withdraw in writing by the end of the first business day of the course, you will receive a refund of the course fee, but not the $30 registration fee. You may FAX your withdrawal to 206-685-9359. Be sure to sign your FAX. There is no refund for withdrawals after the first day of the course. If you stop doing the online assignments, this will not mean you have officially withdrawn. FAX a withdrawal letter by the final day of class if you want to avoid receiving a record of unsuccessful completion.
