About UW Online Learning

The University of Washington began offering correspondence courses in 1912. With the development of the Internet and the World Wide Web, the UW started offering courses and programs online in 1995. Today, students can choose from among 13 degree programs, more than 20 certificate programs, and hundreds of credit and noncredit courses available online, making the UW one of the leading public institutions in the online field. The UW drew nearly 14,000 registrations in its online courses in 2002-03.

UW Online Learning courses are more than just regular classes converted into a web site. The UW has a team of instructional designers dedicated solely to developing high-quality online courses. They work closely with UW faculty and academic departments to create courses that meet the same high standards for excellence as campus classes. UW Online Learning courses are academically rigorous, maximized for an online format, and convenient.

Through online learning, students have greater access to UW courses and programs. That access means more flexibility for learning. By studying online, for example, UW students can earn credits toward their degree, take courses that are difficult to get into on campus, and earn their degree faster. And working adults are able to study via the web at a pace and from a place that fits their busy lives.

UW Online Learning is part of UW Educational Outreach, a nonprofit division of the university that also administers many other programs, classes, workshops and institutes, including the following:
