Graduate Nonmatriculated (GNM) Student Status
GNM status provides access to graduate courses for those who are not currently seeking a graduate degree, but who may later want to apply these credits (up to 12) toward our graduate program. A bachelor's degree and 3.0 GPA in your last 90 quarter (60 semester) hours is required to apply for GNM status. Learn how to register for single courses with GNM status.
Nonmatriculated (NM) Student Status
If you would like to enroll in a single course for information purposes only, and you do not plan to apply the credits you earn toward a degree in the future, you may register as a Nonmatriculated (NM) student through UW Extension. In case of limited space in the class, GNM students will be given priority over NM students. Learn how to register for single courses with NM status.
Graduate Nonmatriculated (GNM) Single-Course Enrollment Process
STEP ONE: APPLY FOR GNM STATUS
To apply for GNM status, download and complete the GNM application form (PDF). Submit the GNM application with two sets of official transcripts from all collegiate schools attended, including the UW to:
GNM Office
Box 84808
Seattle, WA 98124-6108
In addition you must also submit the following to the Masters in Strategic Planning for Critical Infrastructures program:
- one copy of the GNM application form
- one copy of transcripts from all collegiate schools attended, including the UW
- a current résumé and a cover letter identifying the classes you wish to take, indicating whether you are interested in pursuing the MSPCI program and, if so, when you plan on applying for admission

The UW Graduate School will notify you by mail when your GNM status is approved. (This may take two to three weeks.) Once you have GNM status you may register for class through UW Extension (proceed to Step Two, below). Acceptance as a GNM student confers no guarantee or priority for later admission to the Graduate School for pursuit of a degree program. After completing their initial quarter GNM students will not lose their GNM status unless they miss four consecutive quarters of registration, or register as any other status.
