Who Should Participate?

The Institute is designed for coaches, math specialists, staff developers, and others who support professional development of elementary teachers in mathematics.

About the Institute

Institute Description

With a focus on developing reflective and purposeful practice, the program addresses challenges math coaches encounter in a role designed to support robust mathematics instruction. The program provides opportunities to explore the mathematics of elementary school and to experience this mathematics from the perspective of the student, the classroom teacher and the coach. Participants consider issues of adult learning and analyze the process of teacher change. They also examine the process of their own learning, and engage in discussions with coach colleagues to develop a deeper understanding of, and potential for, the coaching role.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of math coaching and how to work with those complexities. They will learn a variety of approaches to working with individual teachers, grade level teams, and whole staffs.
