How Online Learning Works
Classes in this certificate program are delivered online via the World Wide Web, which means you don't need to come to campus to earn your certificate: You can study from anywhere. To access your course materials, you'll simply log on to the Internet. You'll use e-mail and online discussion boards to communicate with your instructors and other students. And since all courses in this online certificate program may be started anytime, you set the schedule. When you study is entirely up to you. To participate, you'll need a computer with access to the Web (see technology requirements). Student programs and performance are monitored and evaluated by experienced instructors. After you are accepted and enrolled in a course, you will be mailed instructions on how to access your classes.
Delivery Formats
Section B: Qualified students may enroll in this independent-start section of the program at any time. Students will have 3 months following the date of enrollment to complete the course.
Interested students may enroll directly in the preparatory course, Introduction to Web Publishing, without the need to apply for admission. The course follows an independent-start delivery format, and may be started anytime.
Qualities for Success in Online Learning
Prospective participants should consider their learning style and preferences if they intend to apply for the online learning version of the program. Some points to consider:
- Online learning can be a good choice, especially if you manage your time well in achieving goals, are self-directed, and enjoy working on your own.
- Courses rely on written instructions rather than in-person explanations from your instructor. You should be comfortable with learning through reading and communicating primarily in writing.
- An online discussion forum for each lesson connects you to other students and to your instructor.
- Online learning does save on commuting time. However, these courses require at least as much time as attending classes and completing assignments for classroom-based courses.
How Technology Enhances Your Learning
A course website provides online lectures, organized as narratives within lessons, reading and study directions, quizzes intended for self-assessment, and assignments.
E-mail and, in some cases, voice mail allow you to ask questions of your instructor. The instructor will either e-mail a reply or post the question and answer to the discussion forum to benefit other participants.
Students have the ability to send assignments electronically. Each student's work is evaluated by experienced instructors.
