Scientists, engineers, planners and other professionals who want to develop and expand their career opportunities in wetland science and management in both the public and private sectors benefit from this nine-month program. Science educators seeking greater understanding of wetland science also find the program useful. Many students use this program to prepare for entry-level positions in wetland-related work.

The significance of wetlands in a landscape context is covered, as well as processes and functions which occur in wetlands, and legal/policy components of wetland regulation and management. Fieldwork and wetland-related research span the entire program and are integrated with all coursework.

Students who complete the program can expect to:

  • Understand the physical and biological characteristics of wetlands and their functions.
  • Understand the landscape perspective of wetlands within broader ecosystems.
  • Understand concepts of wetland functional assessment and be familiar with different assessment methodologies.
  • Be familiar with federal, state and local laws for wetlands regulation and management.
  • Be able to prepare a conceptual restoration plan.
  • Be able to identify common wetlands by field characteristics.
  • Have a working knowledge of wetland classification methods, sampling methodologies and wetland information sources.
  • Have a basic understanding of practical wetlands management issues.
  • Be able to write a basic wetland delineation report, with a wetland rating and functional assessment.
  • Have completed a comprehensive wetland project incorporating the issues covered throughout the program.

A certificate and 18 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded to participants upon completion of the program.
