Program Overview
According to the Gartner Group, 45% of the U.S. workforce currently uses, as a productivity tool, some type of mobile device, e.g., a basic cellular phone or smart phone, and/or a laptop or other handheld device equipped with local area and/or wide area wireless data connectivity. The same study predicts that by 2007, more than 50% of enterprises with more than 1,000 employees will use at least one of these wireless networking technologies.
IP, the Internet Protocol, is the chosen platform for converged communication in future '3G' cellular wide area networks, wireless local area networks, personal area networks, and emerging wireless broadband networks often referred to as 802.16 WiMAX, 802.20, or as '4G' technologies.
In addition, wireless technologies are beginning to co-exist and emerge as Cellular/WiFi, Cellular/Bluetooth, and Cellular/Ultra-Wideband (UWB) devices.
This certificate program will provide IT personnel (such as network designers, network administrators/installers, project planners, business analysts, and managers) with a solid understanding of current and emerging wireless technologies including:
- Wireless local area network (WLAN) WiFi 802.11a/b/g technologies.
- Wireless wide area network cellular technologies such as GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, CDMA2000, and 1xEV-DO.
- Wireless personal area network (WPAN) technologies including 802.15.1 Bluetooth, 802.15.3c, 802.15.4 ZigBee, 802.15.4a Ultra-Wideband (UWB), and 802.15.5 (Mesh Networks).
- Broadband wireless access (BWA) network technologies such as 802.16 and 802.20.
Following the successful completion of the Wireless Technology certificate program, participants may choose to take the Planet 3 Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA) industry certification test. This test can be taken at the student's discretion and is not a deliverable of this certificate program. The instructor of the third course will provide certification test sites to those students wishing to take the test following completion of the program.
