Autumn Course

Sustainable Transportation: Transportation Planning

Schedule: Tuesdays, Oct. 6-Dec. 8, 2009, 6-9 p.m. PST; Credit Option: $1,785/CEU Option: $895; 3 credits/3.0 CEUs. Instructors: Ryan Avery

This course will provide you with an overview of transportation planning and how sustainability fits into this important field. Topics covered include the institutional framework for transportation planning, legal and legislative Issues, land use planning, capacity analysis, supply management and an overview of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). You will also learn about the tasks and tools of transportation planning and how they are used at the site, city, region and state levels. An introduction to travel demand forecasting and environmental analysis will also be covered.


Winter Course

Sustainable Transportation: Livable CommunitiesClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

What transportation options make for a livable community and a sustainable transportation system? In this class you will explore the positives and negatives affecting livability. You will learn about sprawl and compact cities, energy issues and environmental quality, transit-oriented and traditional neighborhood development, and mixed-use and mixed income developments. You will also learn about how to apply context sensitive solutions to transportation projects.

Spring Course

Sustainable Transportation: Transportation ChoicesClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Tuesdays, March 30-June 1, 2010, 6-9 p.m. PST; Credit Option: $1,785/CEU Option: $895; 3 credits/3.0 CEUs. Instructors: Alon Bassok

In this course, you will explore the range of sustainable transportation choices for both people and goods. You will review passenger modes of transportation including bicycles, single-occupancy vehicles, car and van pools, shared autos, bus, rail, ferries, trolleys and foot travel. Transit design and planning for passenger facilities will also be covered in this section of the course. The other major focus of this course is the movement of goods. You will learn about the supply chain in "Supply Chain 101." Various freight modes, including trucks, trains, ships, barges and pipelines, and the regulatory approaches to each of these modes will also be discussed. You will also review the range of freight facilities, such as waterways, airports, terminals and tracks.
