Autumn Course
Sports Management: Expanding the Opportunities (SPMGMT 410)
Schedule: Sept. 24-Dec. 13, 2008 (Independent Study along with some full day weekend sessions: Fridays, Oct. 10 and Dec. 12, 1:00-7:00 p.m., and Saturdays, Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13, 8:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.); 3.3 CEUs; $865.
Instructors: Lopez, Walsh
Students examine a number of topics, including the history of sports management and management principles applied to sports management; they review the many, varied segments within sports – international sport, high school and youth sports, collegiate sports, recreational sports and the health and fitness industry. Students will hear from a number of leaders in many different areas within the field to begin to determine their own individual interests and to identify the skills they have (and what skills they need) to be successful. Course format combines several extended face-to-face meetings with online activities and exchanges in between.
Winter Course
The Business of Sports (SPMGMT 420)
Schedule: Jan. 5-March 14, 2009 (Independent study along with some full day weekend sessions: Fridays, Jan. 16 and Feb. 13, 1:00-7:00 p.m., and Saturdays, Jan. 17, Feb. 14, and Mar. 14, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.); 3.3 CEUs; $865.
Instructors: Tija Petrovich and Sandy Smith
Students develop a business plan for a sports organization, identify challenges the organization will face and suggest a way to move forward. Topics include marketing, legal, ethical and financial principles as applied to sports management. Course format combines several extended face-to-face meetings with online activities and exchanges in between.
Spring Course
Managing the Process: Athletic Events, Programs and Products (SPMGMT 430)
Schedule: March 31-June 13, 2009 (Independent Study along with some full day weekend sessions: Fridays, May 8 and June 12, 1:00-7:00 p.m., and Saturdays, April 11, May 9, and June 13, 8:30-4:30 p.m.); 3.3 CEUs; $865.
Instructor: Petesch
Students learn to plan (or develop a bid for) an event /service/product/program for an organization. Topics include event management, sporting goods and products industries, sales, sponsorships, communications, and broadcasting, and issues related to facility and site management. Course format combines several extended face-to-face meetings with online activities and exchanges in between.
