Certificate program students are required to attend an orientation on Monday, July 7, 2008, 10am-12pm, on the UW campus, Seattle.

Administration of the School Library Media Program (LIS 585, 3 credits) Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Instructor: Debra Kilcup

Develops competency in administering materials, equipment and services of the library media program as an integral part of the educational process of school. Focuses on developing skills in acquiring, organizing and managing the full range of learning resources for access and use, and presenting the program to users. The emphasis of this course is school library media resources and services. Provides an overview of the central role of library media programs, major principles, and current issues in the field. Students develop a personal professional growth plan that guides fieldwork.

Information Technology for Teaching and Learning (LIS 498, 3 credits, CR/NC only)Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Electronic information access and communication skills are developed to foster a vision for technology use that facilitates student and professional learning. Lab experiences center on information technology systems and strategies for their use. Students explore criteria for the selection of instructional technologies and principles of managing maintenance and use. Participants:

  • Use the internet for communication and information access

Information Literacy for Teaching and Learning (LIS 568, 3 credits)Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Instructor: Gail Anderson

Theories, process and practical applications of information literacy. Development of information literacy programs for libraries, community agencies, business, education or other information settings. Intrinsic themes include the integral relationship between technology and information literacy, and continual evaluation. The emphasis of the course is on school library media resources and services. Students design, implement and assess information-rich units of study, integrating information literacy skills with classroom content. Washington Essential Learnings and Alaska Essential Goals are examined as they relate to the school library media program. Participants:

  • Critique information processing models
  • Develop and implement collaborative, information-based units of study
  • Evaluate and redesign units, assessment tools and strategies

Students examine, use and evaluate print and electronic reference resources used in K-12 education. Techniques of effective information service and principles of resource selection are applied. Participants:

  • Use varied electronic information retrieval and networking systems
  • Develop a "tool kit" database of reference resources
  • Apply criteria to develop media resources

Electronic networking, Web site development and library automation systems are surveyed from a manager's perspective. Participants sharpen electronic access and communication skills that facilitate student learning in the classroom and library. Participants:

  • Articulate a vision for instructional technology leadership
  • Use web authoring tools and HTML as a presentation portfolio vehicle
