Autumn Course
It's the Image that Communicates
This course comprises a series of lecture sessions titled Historical View of Image Making, and a series of lab sessions titled Introduction to Photographic Techniques. You will participate in the lectures and lab sessions. Schedules and session descriptions are provided below.

Historical View of Image Making (Lecture Sessions)
This opens the program with an enjoyable view of photography that looks at photography's origins to the contemporary images. This course helps you build the foundation and understanding for your personal image making. Learn how changing technologies, social and political conditions, artistic trends and technology have influenced photographers throughout history. The course will emphasize the contributions of photographers who have invented major conventions and design concepts we use today.

Introduction to Photographic Techniques (Lab Sessions)
This introduces the skills and techniques required for creative image making. Study both wet chemical and digital photographic processes, learning how to use photographic equipment to create dynamic visual images. Through lectures, assignments and hands on experience you will learn creative design and composition, techniques and skills for commercial and fine art applications of photography.

This course comprises two separate series of lab sessions titled Basic Digital Techniques and Advanced Photographic Techniques. You will participate in both lab series. Schedules and session descriptions are provided below.

Basic Digital Techniques (Lab Sessions)
These lab sessions provide a solid introduction to the photographer's digital toolkit: Adobe Photoshop. Learn efficient methods for scanning, color and tonality corrections, retouching, image construction with layers and that important issue to photographers: workflow. This class is offered in smaller groups in the Mac lab at the UW School of Art, which has high speed color copying and output printing equipment.

Advanced Photographic Techniques (Lab Sessions)
In these lab sessions, each student develops a photographic project and produces a small portfolio of prints using either traditional or digital photographic techniques. This more advanced course emphasizes the creative skills through camera use, exposure and development, printing techniques, design, editing, matting and framing of images. Viewing the film biographies of contemporary photographers and hearing in their own words how they approach photography will expand understanding of creative image making.

Advanced Digital Techniques (Lab Sessions)
In these lab sessions, you will take creativity in digital photography to the next level! Harness the power of layers, channels and other techniques to make precise selections and color corrections. Allow images to blend creatively and predictably using blending modes and layer masks. Explore filters and recipes to reproduce traditional and new processes. Refine your skills, and learn time saving tips to use Photoshop like an expert.

Photographic Exhibition (Lab Sessions)
In these sessions, you will use traditional and/or digital techniques to create a series of professional fine art photographs for public exhibition. You will plan, organize and present this exhibition of your photographic work as a conclusion to your studies. You will also have an opportunity to learn directly from guest speakers who work in the fine art, commercial and business world of photography. Several Seattle-based professional photographers will visit us to share their knowledge, experience and answer your questions.

A two-week student photographic exhibit is hung in a gallery on the UW campus. In addition, program graduates host an opening night reception.
