Overview
A First-Year (Level I) Writers' Program
Approved by the UW English Department and UW Department of Communication
Also offered beginning Winter 2008 in a three-month intensive format in Bellevue >>
Basic techniques of nonfiction writing from concept to publication are covered in this three-course sequence, which prepares students to write and submit their work to a variety of newspapers, magazines, or book publishers. The instructors—all published writers—use lectures, exercises, readings, and hands-on projects to define and illustrate effective interviewing and research techniques, plus basic organizational approaches for genres including travel, science, humor, profiles, reviews, and how-to. Shorter- and intermediate-length assignments completed in the first two courses lead to the program's centerpiece: a publishable, feature-length article, personal essay, or book chapter written in the final course. Notable writers appear as guest speakers.
