Instructors

Carlos Cuevas, M.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Radiology, Body Imaging Section at University of Washington Medical Center

Cuevas received his medical degree in 1992 from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile's School of Medicine in Santiago, Chile. Cuevas completed his residency in Santiago, Chile at the Universidad de Chile's School of Medicine in 2000. After completing his medical training as an Abdominal Imaging Fellow at the University of Washington, Cuevas joined the staff in June of 2002 as an Acting Assistant Professor. As a fellow at the University of Washington, Cuevas has implemented a CT colonography-screening program for patients desiring non-invasive screening for colorectal cancer or patients who have failed the endoscopy. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2005.

Walter A. (Bud) Kukull, Ph.D.
Professor, Epidemiology, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington

A member of the UW faculty since 1983, Kukull's principal research focus is the epidemiology of Alzheimer's diseases. He also teaches Neuro-Epidemiology and Introductory Epidemiology. Kukull is a fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science.

John Overbeck, M.D., M.S.E.
Attending Physician, Nuclear Medicine, Evergreen Hospital, and Assistant Professor, UW Division of Nuclear Medicine / Affiliate Assistant Professor with Bioengineering

Overbeck is a physician with master's degrees in both bioengineering and electrical/computer engineering. His research interests include nuclear medicine and ultrasound. Overbeck's educational interests are in teaching the medical communication and problem-solving (diagnostic) skills engineers need to bridge the communication gap between clinicians and engineers. Prior to his graduate education, Overbeck founded a pioneering electronics business.

Tony Yen, M.D.
Internal Medicine Specialist, Medical Director, Information Technology, Evergreen Hospital Medical Center

Yen is board-certified in internal medicine and serves as a hospitalist for Evergreen Hospital Medical Center. As Medical Director for Information Technology, Yen works with staff and physicians to use technology to improve care for patients. Yen received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, and completed a residency at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Yen's medical interests include the full spectrum of care within a hospital setting, and education of patients and staff to improve the quality and continuity of care, and pneumonia.

R. Eugene Zierler, M.D.
Professor, Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, University of Washington School of Medicine

Zierler received both his undergraduate and medical education at Johns Hopkins University, receiving an A.B. degree in 1973 and the M.D. degree in 1976. This was followed by a residency in general surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Washington. Zierler's research interests have focused on the development and clinical applications of noninvasive diagnostic techniques for vascular disease. His major area of interest is the evaluation of renal artery disease and follow-up of renal artery interventions with duplex ultrasound. He also has been involved with regulatory issues such as accreditation of vascular laboratories and credentialing of vascular technologists. Zierler is Medical Director of the Vascular Diagnostic Service at the University of Washington Medical Center and the Vascular Laboratory at Harborview Medical Center.
