Autumn Course

Foundations of Low Impact DevelopmentClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Wednesdays, 6-8 p.m., Sept. 30-Dec. 16, 2009, Saturdays, 9-3:30 p.m., Nov. 7 & Dec. 5, 2009; $615; 3 CEUs; Downtown Seattle. Instructor: Wayne Carlson.

This course introduces students to the principles of Low Impact Development through lectures, readings, design exercises, and field trips. The course will explore the history of low impact development as a stormwater management strategy applied internationally, nationally, and locally. This course will review the environmental regulations that have brought about the practice of LID. Students will be introduced to the myriad of planning, public works, and environmental regulations that may pose impediments to the use of LID and the strategies that can be used to vary from or amend the standards. This course includes two required Saturday field trips: November 7th and December 5th, 9-3:30 p.m.

In this course, students will:

  • Learn the history of low impact development application as a stormwater management strategy
  • Learn LID science and best management practices
  • Learn why LID can be a cost effective method for managing stormwater
  • Learn how environmental policies such as regional initiatives and jurisdictional regulations impact the ability to apply low impact development at various project sites
  • Learn how stormwater management impacts ecological processes and habitat.
  • Learn the history of land use planning.
  • Learn the basics of site assessment.

Winter Course

Practical Applications of LIDClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Wednesdays, 6-8 p.m., Jan. 6-Mar. 10, 2010; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Jan. 23 & Feb. 6, 2010; $615; 3 CEUs; Downtown Seattle. Instructor: Dustin Atchison.

This course will take students through the progression of LID design from site assessment and layout, interdisciplinary and agency coordination, and design of practices. Students will participate in a field trip to understand the site assessment process and participate in a group design charette to demonstrate understanding of the unique LID design process. This course includes two required Saturday field trips on January 23rd and February 6th, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

In this course, students will:

  • Learn the process of site assessment.
  • Learn the principles of site design to preserve and enhance hydrologic functions.
  • Learn how to design LID practices.
  • Collaborate as an interdisciplinary team to design a LID project.

Spring Course

Implementing LID ProjectsClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Wednesdays, 6-8 p.m., Mar. 31-June 2, 2010; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Apr. 24 & May 22, 2010; $615; 3 CEUs; Downtown Seattle. Instructor: Greg Giraldo.

The final course of the series will focus on the implementation of LID projects. The course is intended to study the application of concepts presented in the previous courses. Learn the principles, practices and techniques for design, construction, inspection and post construction evaluation of LID projects. The course will concentrate on LID projects achieving stormwater management goals. This course includes two required Saturday field trips on April 24th and May 22, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

In this course students will:

  • Learn how to apply low impact design concepts
  • Learn how to collaborate with other members of the design and construction team
  • Learn how to deal with issues relating to design plans and specifications for low impact development projects
  • Learn key elements relating to construction observation, project sequencing, and protection measures
  • Learn methods for post construction plant establishment, testing, and project evaluation.
  • Learn how to execute operation and maintenance agreements
  • Learn how to monitor and evaluate project performance
