Autumn Courses

The Human Resources Manager

Schedule: (10 sessions) Mondays, 6:00-8:30 p.m., Sept. 29-Dec. 1, 2008; $569; 2.5 CEUs. Instructor: Michael Walters

This course presents a comprehensive overview of the role of the human resources professional and the HR function as a strategic business partner within an organization. Topics include:

  • The history and development of human resource management
  • The future of HR and the HR audit
  • How to identify and measure strategic, or value added HRM practices and metrics
  • Managing teams and projects
  • The impact of technology on HRIS
  • Outsourcing
  • HR ethics and leadership


Employee Relations

Schedule: (10 sessions) Wednesdays, 6:00-8:30 p.m., Oct. 1-Dec. 10 (no class Nov 26), $569; 2.5 CEUs.

Instructors: Maureen Ryan and Rick Kaiser

This course emphasizes employment laws and practical skills for managing the employee relations function. Topics include:

  • Anti-discrimination laws governing the employment relationship
  • Investigation of discrimination and whistleblower complaints
  • Progressive discipline
  • Labor relations
  • Workplace privacy and testing
  • Employee handbooks
  • State and federal employment laws governing the need for family and medical leave

Winter Courses

Training and Staff DevelopmentClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: (10 sessions) Mondays, 6:00-8:30 p.m., Jan. 5-Mar. 9, 2009 and Tuesdays, 6:00-8:30 p.m., Jan. 20, 2009 & Feb. 17, 2009 (No class on Jan. 19 or Feb. 16), $569; 2.5 CEUs.

Instructor: Linda Callecod

This course explores the training "Best Practices" of leading industries, and provides strategies and tactics for managing training and staff development. You will build skills in understanding, performing and leading the development, creation, implementation, and management of an effective training and development program. Topics include:

  • Needs and skills assessments
  • Techniques
  • Evaluation criteria
  • Corporate positioning for increased resources
  • Instructional design
  • Setting training objectives
  • Developing a sample training plan

This course provides an intensive overview of employee benefits, including characteristics of life, disability, health care and retirement plans. Topics include:

  • Statutory coverages
  • Design of medical benefit programs

  • Employee benefit rights
  • Tax considerations
  • Current issues in employee benefits

This course provides an in-depth investigation of the relationship between compensation, reward systems and performance review. Topics include:

  • Compensation plan structure and design
  • Job pricing and salary surveys
  • Incentive compensation systems and non-economic rewards
  • Development of criteria and standards for performance review
  • Linking pay plans to strategic/business objectives
  • Effective appraisal systems and how to link them to management objectives and compensation
