Summer Courses

Disease Concepts for Managers (HIHIM 409,
4 credits)
Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00-8:20 p.m., June 24-Aug. 21, 2008; $1,116

  • Disease mechanisms and pathophysiology with an emphasis on clinical information management
  • Methodology for understanding and communicating dimensions of disease states
  • Focus on disease from a health information system perspective

Prerequisites: Human Anatomy.

Introduction to Health Care Systems and Health Data Systems (HIHIM 410, 6 credits) Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:00-6:50 p.m., Sept. 24-Dec. 3, 2008; $1,788

  • Current issues in health care
  • Relationship of the health care system to health data systems, Health care and patient data
  • Application of professional standards to health records and record management systems
  • Health record analysis, facility statistics and data linkage
  • Storage, retrieval, tracking and retention systems

Prerequisites: Statistics, Human Anatomy.

Healthcare Coding, Vocabulary, and Revenue Cycle Management
(HIHIM 412, 5 credits)

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00-6:50 p.m., Sept. 25-Dec. 4, 2008 (no class Nov. 11 and Nov. 27); $1,490

  • ICD9-CM and CPT 4 code systems used to code diagnosis and procedures for research, decision support and billing purposes
  • Overview of special vocabularies: SNOMED, LOINC, Nursing vocabularies for medical concepts
  • Revenue cycle management concepts and practice

Prerequisites: HIHIM 409.


Organizational Theory in Health Facilities (HIHIM 450, 3 credits)

Schedule: Thursdays, 7:00-9:50 p.m., Sept. 25-Dec. 4, 2008 (no class Nov. 11); $894

  • Emphasis on the U.S. health care delivery system
  • Organizational structure, functions and financing of the health care system
  • Exploration of health care policies and their impact on the industry
  • Introduction to medical ethics

  • Site experience in health care facilities with campus and clinical faculty

Prerequisites: HIHIM 410 and HIHIM 450.


Problem Solving and Decision Making in Health Information Management (HIHIM 480, 4 credits)

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00-5:50 p.m., Jan. 6-March 12, 2009; $1,192

  • Management theory and application in health information management
  • Applied tools and experiences in problem-solving and behavioral management
  • Decision-making for health information managers
  • Skill development and application through individual and team projects

Prerequisites: HIHIM 410 and HIHIM 450.

Health Information Systems Analysis (HIHIM 421, 5 credits)

  • Systems analysis of health information systems
  • Life cycle systems development process and tools
  • Project management and team coordination
  • User requirements definition

Prerequisite: HIHIM 420.


Professionalism and Leadership (HIHIM 455, 5 credits)

Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30-8:50 p.m., March 30-June 3, 2009 (no class May 25); $1,490

  • Professional development including a mentorship program
  • Leadership skills assessment
  • Interpersonal communication skills development
  • Human resource management concepts

Quality Assurance and Research in Health Care (HIHIM 456, 5 credits) Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00-6:20 p.m., March 31-June 4, 2009; $1,490

  • Quality improvement, risk management and utilization management in health care
  • Design and analysis of quality improvement systems, including use of data systems in quality assurance and research
  • Health data retrieval, analysis and presentation
  • Review of relevant healthcare informatics research

Prerequisites: Statistics; Medical Terminology.

Management Project II - Capstone (HIHIM 462, 3 credits)

Schedule: Arranged; $894

  • An applied management course in which students work with clinical and HIHIM program faculty to complete a formal project in health information administration
  • Unique projects in health care settings provide field experience in management problem-solving, systems analysis, health information systems implementation, change management and regulatory compliance

Prerequisites: HIHIM 410, 412, 450, 470, 460, 454, 420, 480
