Approved by the UW School of Art

Drawing and painting the human face and figure requires an equal measure of creative energy and technical skills. There are many decisions to be made when rendering the human form and face related to painting and drawing media and technique. The emphasis of this program is focused on the expressive potential of the human figure, along with a basic understanding of proportion and anatomy. Students are encouraged to investigate various forms and styles of art, e.g., abstraction, representation, expressionism, collage,and surrealism. The program also explores the figurative painting styles and methods in art history.

Participants in the program:

  • Learn the craft from accomplished artists and educators with hundreds of works to their credit;
  • Use the studios at the School of Art on the UW campus, Seattle

This program is focused exclusively on figure drawing for painting, portrait painting, and painting from the nude and clothed figure. The program is best suited for more experienced artists-the small class structure will invite interaction with artists and instructors in the studio.

Participants should have some prior experience with drawing and/or painting, and will be admitted to the program with prior completion of the UW Drawing and Painting certificate program or by submission of a satisfactory art portfolio.

Program Outcomes

Program graduates:

  • Create a portfolio of original art representing a variety of techniques;
  • Exhibit work on the University of Washington campus
