Program Overview
This certificate program is designed for the aspiring professional or serious amateur interested in writing, directing, producing, and marketing an independent film. Beginning with the pre-production process, you'll find out what it takes to plan the narrative fiction short or non-fiction documentary. In the production phase, the program divides into two tracks: narrative and documentary. You'll learn production skills through class exercises, shooting, and recording to assemble a strong story by interweaving the writer/producer's voice with visuals and sound. In the post-production, you'll move to the editing suite where the film takes shape using advanced editing tools in the computer lab.
Program success depends on active and collegial participation in the development of team projects. At the end of the program, participants have several finished commercial, short narrative fiction or documentary films on a class DVD. The program culminates with a showing of student work on the UW campus.
The course instructors who guide the hands-on learning are leading professionals who produce, edit, and direct feature length films, documentaries, independent films, corporate productions and commercials.
