Winter Course
Facility Life Cycle 1: Planning
Online Learning: Jan. 5-March 20, 2009, 3 credits; $860. Instructor: Don Baker.
Introduces concepts of facility management, with emphasis on definition of key terms and concepts, business context, and an overview of building facilities planning activities. Designed by a team of practicing professionals, this course uses readings, and interactive exercises to supplement the primary texts. Topics:
- What is facility management?
- Ethics
- Communication skills
- Strategic planning
- Financial concepts, budgets and the budgeting process
- Life cycle cost analysis
- Site issues

Spring Course
Facility Life Cycle 2: Design and Construction
Online Learning: April 6-July 10, 2009, 5 credits; $860. Instructor: Gerry Ronningen-Fenrich.
Focus on the second part of the facility life cycle; continued readings in the text are required, with exercises based on audio, video and electronic materials. Topics:
- Design – process, team, impacts, contracts, ADA
- Interior planning and design, green design
- Specifications, technical writing, cost estimating and reading plans
- Construction – process, permitting, testing and inspection, bidding and contract documents, materials and methods, site issues
- Building systems – data and communication systems, structural systems, mechanical systems, electrical, vertical transportation, fire and life safety
- Project management – administration, quality control, value engineering

Facility Life Cycle 3: Relocation and Operational Issues
Online Learning: Aug. 24-Nov. 13, 2009, 4 credits; $860. Instructors: Brad Taylor.
Provides an overview of issues related to facility operations and maintenance, including relocation moves. Course grade is based on completion of homework, as well as a final project. Topics:
- Occupancy and start-up
- Facility move issues
- Disaster planning and recovery, emergency preparedness, security
- CAFM
- Communication management, project management
- Facilities management business strategy
- Energy efficiency, utilities
- Sustainability, maintenance recycling
Prerequisites: Facility Life Cycle 1: Planning, and Facility Life Cycle 2: Design and Construction.
