See Single-Course Enrollment for details.

Courses should be taken in the following order:

Autumn Course

Strategic Planning for Adaptation to Climate Change Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Oct. 6-Dec. 14, 2009; University of Washington; US $900, 3 CEUs.
Instructor: John R. Labadie

This class deals with the strategic planning needed to adapt to and minimize climate change. Topics include scenario building and decision making uncertainty; mapping climate change to major sectors; understanding the long-term lifecycle planning process; cost analysis; vulnerability and risk assessment; health, safety and equity issues; establishing a plan; group decision making; implementing the plan; and evaluating the effectiveness of the adaptation response.

Winter Course

Climate Literacy Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Jan. 4-Mar. 19, 2010; University of British Columbia; CN $900, 3 CEUs.
Instructors: Tom-Pierre Frappé Sénéclauze and Sarah Burch, Ph.D.

This course covers the basic concepts and terms needed to understand climate change. The class begins with the factors influencing climate including interactions among the atmosphere, oceans, solid earth, and biosphere. It continues with the causes of global warming (fossil fuel use, deforestation, agricultural practices, transportation, oxidation of organic carbons in the soil, etc.); greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide); physical carbon flows and their measurement; the carbon cycle; scientific uncertainty; climate modeling; the IPCC and UNFCC; the social impacts of climate change; and resources to understand climate variability.

Spring Course

Climate Protection & Environmental Sustainability: The Business of Mitigating Climate Change Class is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Schedule: Mar. 29-June 11, 2010; University of California, Irvine; US $900, 3 CEUs.
Instructors: Judy Yorke

This class provides the ability to assess the financial, environmental and business aspects of mitigation efforts and to create a strategic competitive advantage for an organization. It deals with assessing the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory of an organization, measuring and tracking carbon footprints; identifying areas for mitigation including transportation, fuel usage, and facilities; the triple bottom line and the cost/benefit carbon analysis; economic incentives for increasing carbon sequestration and substitution; choosing the best tactics (e.g. renewable energy practice, carbon offsets, etc.) for mitigating carbon footprints; and evaluating the effectiveness of the program. This course and others will utilize case studies to illustrate concepts.
