Autumn Course

Brain Basics and Research ProcessesClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Oct. 7-Dec. 16, 2008; online; 5 CEUs; $895.

This course enhances students' knowledge in core concepts necessary to understanding the structure and functions of the brain. Participants learn to conduct activities that ensure their conceptual understanding. Topics include:

  • Cells of the nervous system (neurons, glia), the blood brain barrier
  • Neural communication
  • Neural development
  • Fundamentals of sensory systems
  • Overview of the motor system

Winter Course

Brain Research Processes and ApplicationsClass is also available to professionals who do not intend to pursue the certificate, but wish to enroll in individual classes on a space available basis

Jan. 13-March 24, 2009; online; 5 CEUs; $895.

This course will increase participants' awareness and enhance their understanding of the processes of brain research. Students will gain a sense of the scope and limitations inherent in brain research methodologies. This course also strengthens participants' skills in accessing and evaluating primary research literature, which promotes continued learning. Topics include:

  • Research methodologies such as brain imaging, single-cell recording, histological techniques, ablation studies, behavioral techniques, and neuro-chemical techniques
  • Historical perspectives and guidelines for critical analysis of brain research, including enriched environments and gender differences, critical periods and depression
  • Critical analysis of current educational research linked to brain research
