Admission Requirements

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Non-native English speakers entering this program are expected to have adequate English language proficiency. Students should meet one or more of the following English language test scores before they attempt to take any courses (other than English language courses for non-native speakers):

  • A TOEFL score of at least 550 (or 213 computer-based)
  • A TOEIC score of at least 750
  • An IELTS score of at least 6.5

International Students: This program does not qualify as full-time study, and therefore does not meet requirements for an F-1 visa. However, if you are an F-1 student currently enrolled full-time in another program, OR you are in the U.S. on some other type of visa (not F-1), you may be eligible to take a certificate program or course. For complete details, or to contact an adviser, see Visa Information.

NOTE: Matriculated undergraduate students ARE NOT eligible for this program. For other course options, please see your adviser.

Application Process

The 2009 program begins in Winter 2009. Applications are now being accepted and will be reviewed in the order they are received starting October 13 through December 1, 2008. After December 1, 2008 you are encouraged to call 206-685-8936 or e-mail us to learn if a program is still accepting applications.

To Apply: Submit one copy of the application form with a $50 certificate program fee* and two stapled application sets, which include the following clearly labeled documents:

  1. A typed (500-word maximum) letter of application. Applicants should be clear, concise and provide specific examples while answering the following questions:
    • What are the unique strengths, talents and skills that you bring to the program?
    • What are your expectations of the program personally and professionally?
  2. Your résumé listing education and applicable experience

Application Review: Selection of program participants is based on admission requirements. Applicants receive written notification of their acceptance or non-acceptance within two weeks after their application is received.

Enrollment: Applicants accepted to the program receive enrollment information for the first-term course and are encouraged to make their fall tuition payment early. Enrollment in the program is on a first-come, first-served basis, upon receipt of the first-term tuition payment.

Waitlist: Some programs maintain a waitlist for applicants accepted after the program has reached enrollment capacity. If space becomes available, waitlisted applicants will be notified and given an opportunity to enroll. If space does not become available, waitlisted applicants will be offered a space in the next program offering.

Refunds

For complete refund and withdrawal policies, please refer to Student Information & Services.

* The certificate program fee is not refundable and does not guarantee admission to, or enrollment in, the program.

Fees and Tuition

Tuition is payable on a quarterly basis. The cost for Winter Quarter is $1,899, which does not include a $50 nonrefundable certificate application fee. Spring Quarter tuition is $1,899. There is also a $35 nonrefundable registration fee, a $33 technology fee for winter quarter and a $29 technology fee for spring quarter. For those students earning graduate-level credit, the technology fee is $41 each quarter. The cost of textbooks is extra. A $90 late fee may be assessed if registration is not complete by the third class meeting.

Fees are subject to change.

Credit and Earning the Certificate

Students must successfully complete Winter Quarter and Spring Quarter to earn 15 ADMIN 510 credits and a certificate. No partial credit is awarded. Successful completion includes a business plan.

Participants are evaluated each quarter on the basis of standards established by the instructors and the UW Business School. At the end of each quarter, participants are notified of successful or unsuccessful completion. Participants need to successfully complete the requirements of the first term before they advance to the next term. When the program is completed, participants earn a certificate that is presented at the annual UW Extension awards ceremony.

Students wishing to earn graduate-level credit at the UW must be accepted into a graduate status. If you have questions, contact your department or the Graduate Admissions Office at 206-543-5929.
